- The thicker mouthpiece spreads more of the pressure applied by the reins over the bars of the mouth, the tongue and the roof of the mouth than a thinner mouthpiece would
- The single joint applies a nut cracker action which applies pressure to the tongue, the bars of the mouth and the horse's palate
